We have managed to obtain a very small number of CounterCoin from Newcastle. These super-rare first issue acrylic coins are the forerunners of a much larger scheme that will use ceramic tokens. The ceramic 'coins' should be in greater supply when they start to circulate.
The acrylic coins were a pilot token for a scheme that has all the money experts interested. Similar to a LETS, the Newcastle CounterCoin has significant differences. First, it can only be earned into existence. Second, the places it can be redeemed are using coins to help with over-supply or otherwise unused facilities - such as seats at the local cinema which would otherwise remain empty or bread at the end of a day that would be thrown away in a supermarket.
